Things to know about laminate flooring

Laminate has evolved over the years, from one once known mainly as an economy product to one that offers sophisticated style and functionality. The multi-layered product is fused and has a decorative image layer that is a realistic mimic of wood, stone, or tile. This layer comes in a wide variety of colors, patterns, and designs with deep embossing for depth and dimension, as well as textured appearances: wire-brushed, hand scraped, weathered, and distressed. It can be cut into planks to simulate hardwood boards or square tile-sized pieces. Visit us if you’re shopping for laminate flooring in Rockwell, NC.

Installation is a snap — literally

One of the most appealing benefits of laminate is that it offers a fast and uncomplicated floating floor technique, with no messy clean up afterward. Floating floors mean the pieces click together to form a mat. The mat hovers over the subfloor with no nails, adhesives, mortars, or grout necessary.

Subfloors need to be clean, dry, and level. While laminate is highly water-resistant, sometimes almost completely waterproof, that is a result of a superior installation. It can even be installed in a kitchen, as long as it is installed tightly and with finished edges.

The installer will sometimes need to use expanders or caulking and might even sand the subfloor. Sanding makes sure the floor is even and that imperfections won’t travel up to the surface floor. Your floor will be flat, shiny, and intact.

Durability

The product has a top, clear, aluminum-oxide coated wear layer to protect the floor from scratches, scuffs, and wear. It is impossible to "walk-off" the image. Thickness is important, and it's recommended that you go for at least 9-mm, but as high as 10 or 12-mm if you want a more firm, authentic hardwood feel. While cores mainly affect water resistance and not durability, you might select HDF (high-density fiberboard), which is known for greater stability and higher moisture tolerance. Also, know it is easy maintenance. A regular sweeping or dry mopping with a periodic deeper cleaning is all that is needed. Avoid wax, shine promoting cleaners.
